In a world filled with magic, love might be the final answer in the eternal battle between good and evil. When Lux is tasked with retrieving the virtuous Lily for his master, his entire world is put in jeopardy. Lux must battle goblins, demon dogs, and sea dragons to rescue the one he loves, and that's only the beginning of what he must face... Virtue is a fairy tale for young adults with action, suspense, and romance. It contains mild language and some suggestive dialogue. Recommended ages 14 and up.

About the Book:
At the bidding of his master, Lux must attend a ball he finds distasteful where he meets up with young Lilly. Lilly seems quite shy, yet forward somehow and soon they share that first kiss which is always so tantalizing. As she touches the back of Lux's neck and twirls a bit of his hair around her finger, Lux gets a unique feeling that stops him in his tracks.
It is only later Lux learns he is expected to `kidnap' Lilly because she is being traded to Lux's master by her own stepmother. Taking Lilly to his master seems like a horrible idea ever since Lilly twisted his hair around her fingers. To protect her Lux drops Lilly off at the scariest enchanted forest. How strange but Lux does have some very good reasons for it. From there Lux must return to his master empty handed and face the wrath or figure out a way to save both Lilly and himself. Thus begins the tale of good versus evil complete with demons, goblins, and sea monsters.

My Take:
Having never read any of Hocking's books before, I cannot say if this is a good example of her work. Those who read her work should look at the fan reviews on Amazon. I can say that for a fairy tale this is a good story. It is not a Romance with a capital `R' and though there are innuendos, the story is chaste.
Virtue started out rather interesting, especial when Lux meets Lilly. By the time Lux drops Lilly at the enchanted forest I was seeing shades Snow White. This story weaves much more of a tale. Think Snow White meets the Old Testament. The reason Lux's master wants Lilly is so he marry her, thus winning her to his side and shifting the balance of power, which will allow him to win control of earth for all time.
Like most fairy tales, the characters are second to the story. There is a bit of affinity for the main characters and a few of the minor characters, but most of the time the characters tend to be rather flat. This is common for fairy tales where the overriding quality of the tale is the moral. The writing is clean and straightforward, well edited, a joy to read.

All in all, I enjoyed the tale and the writing. If you liked the movie Princess Bride, this tale may well remind you of it, and you should find this as likable.

Virtue A Fairy Tale (Audible Audio Edition) Amanda Hocking Josh Hurley Audible Studios Books Reviews

First, I'm a big Hocking fan and supporter. When I read the description of this book on her blog, I expected a sweet love story for a very young audience, ages 14 and up. Being the old person that I am, I wanted to be whisked away back to my childhood and this certainly took me there. Yes, it could have been longer (for older readers) but remember, this was a magical fairy tale and I for one appreciated the characters.

While I don't disagree that it felt short, that was really because I wanted more detail about the world that Lily and Lux lived in..I would have liked more information about the magical creatures (I wanted faeries!) and hoped for a bigger understanding of what happened to Instonia to make it so bleak..was it her mother's death? And I presumed that her mother gave up being a castimonia and replaced herself with Lily? That part I assumed to be true. It would have been nice if her father had a stronger role, or if we could see what he was going through when Lily was gone, but otherwise the tale was purity at it's finest. I think I love Lux.

No, I don't think it was so simple that you could figure out the ending, as a matter of fact, I was surprised with the ending. Happily of course! Yes, it's a fairy tale, and Hocking delivers what she intends; a sweet, coming of age fairy tale about love and courage that made me smile. Thanks Amanda! I'll re-read it again when I'm feeling blue...)
I was having one of those weekends where I was super busy and didn't want to get into a long book I wouldn't be able to sit and enjoy for a long period of time. So, I bought Virtue by Amanda Hocking to read. I had heard it was a quick little read that was very enjoyable and as I've said before, (and maybe even gotten a little preachy on the subject) I love Amanda Hocking's work.

This book follows the story of Lux and Lily. Lux must steal Lily from her castle home for his master, even though he has no idea why. He goes to a ball where she will be and lures her out of the ballroom and outside with him. After falling for Lily's innocence and loving nature, he lets her escape into the dreaded woods that surrounds their castles land. After this one defining moment, Lily and Lux must decide what is right and the difference between good and evil.

While this book may not have been Hocking's best, I still finished it in a matter of an hour and a half and really enjoyed it. I felt it was directed towards a younger audience but the story of good versus evil and two people's struggle with destiny hook you in. As in some of Hockings earlier self-published novels, there are some typos and little technical errors. Virtue may not have the most complex storyline, but if you're looking for an easy read to escape life for a little while, this book could be a little treat on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
